1. How would you characterize the leadership style of each of the managers described in this case?

Amy Allen:

According to the information provided in the case, Amy Allen is autocratic, more specifically: directive autocrat, as she is controlling virtually everything: procedures and efficiency. She makes all decisions by herself, tells people what to do and does not take any of her employees’ opinions before making her decisions.

Also, Amy Allen is more to practice task management style in leading her department. Task management style is more to care about the production rather than having concerns for subordinates and fulfilling tasks based on having good relationship with the group members. Amy Allen believes that all her group members should be responsible for the task they are assigned to and must complete their tasks with following the specific instruction provided by her. Task management style is meant to be caring more about production and that can be a reason why she is satisfied with her division output. This style might work well for her division when high or low level of situational control exists in which there is no time for asking other’s opinion and ideas and providing instruction for group members how to do the job would be helpful to perform better and faster. On the other hand, when there is moderate level of situational control in which all group members can be asked to express their opinion to find out the most efficient way to fulfill the task, task management style could fail. In those situations asking team members opinions would increase motivation and inspiration among them just for being involved in the process of making a decision which at the end could result in more productivity for her division.
