Introduction
There’s a very thin line separating Politicians and Celebrities. Nowadays we would encounter actors jumping into the political bandwagons as a way to keep themselves relevant in the eyes of both the media and the people. Although there some who have real genuine political beliefs, there are also those who only capitalize based from their money and popularity.
Believe it or not, there came a time when politicians were viewed with respect in the eyes of both media members and the Filipino citizens. But within the last four decades, the line separating elected officials and celebrities began to blur. We often notice lots of tabloids covering every aspect of political life, from legislation to sex scandals, similar to celebrities.
We Filipinos are preoccupied with celebrities and entertainment. It’s the subject of our conversations. The obsession to media may even reflect some of our national values. And the fact that celebrities are very aware and take to great advantage this preoccupation that we Filipinos have, there’s no surprise they courageously embark on political careers.
And as the 2013 elections come near, the steady growth in the number of entertainers seeking public office continue to rise. Thus, inspiring us researchers to determine and establish a clear reason why celebrities engage in politics.
