Geologic History
Plate Tectonic Theory
Philippines is the product of the continental drift of the Philippine sea plate
Collision of the Eurasian Plate (where the Asian lands once lay) and the Philippine Sea Plate with the Pacific Plate and the Indian-Australian created the current low and high lands, islands and seas in the Philippines
Tectonic Plates- massive, irregular shaped of solid rocks, composed of both continental of oceanic lithosphere
Major type
Divergent Plates- plates move apart from one another
Convergent Plates- plates move towards one another
Transformed Plates- plates slide past one another
Pleistocene ( 2million BC)
Distinct geological features and water forms has an array of land.
Evidences of these were the Sierra Madre Range and Zambales Range
Development of many unique species of plants and animals as a result of its long-standing isolation from other land masses.
100-65 million B.C.
Proto Philippines : island areas of Bicol, Leyte, Eastern Mindanao
: served as the first islands that shape the country
55-35 million B.C.
Upward direction of the Sierra Madre Range and the Zambales range
During this movement, 3 major island groups emerged. Luzon which covered Luzon up to Samar, Eastern and Central Mindanao and Zamboanga and Western Mindanao
Some Volcanic activities and earthquakes creating trenches(deepest part of the ocean) : Bicol, Leyte
Other volcanoes formed: Batanes, Southern Tagalog, Panay-Negros, Zamboanga and Sulu
Faults were created : there were constant quakes that started in Mindanao that ran through Leyte, Masbate and Quezon until it halted at Cordillera
The formation of rivers and valleys in Marikina and Central Luzon were assumed to be the result of the convergent plate boundaries
South China Sea widen because of the aperture(opening) In between the Eurasian plate and the Micro continental block
Collision of the micro continental block of Palawan and Mindoro into...
