THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS
Definition:
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is the Sacrament of the Priesthood. It is a CALLING, and an
AUTHORITY. "Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority
.." (LUK 9:1)
THE CALLING:
Has to be from God, "And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as
was Aaron." (HEB 5:4)
Jesus called His disciples by the two simple words, "Follow me". Peter and Andrew (Mat 4:19),
John and James (Mat 4:21), Matthew (Mat 9:9) and Philip (John 1:43).
THE AUTHORITY:
Is also from God, Jesus told His disciples, "As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." (John
20:21). "He that heareth you heareth me, and he that despithes you despithes me, and he that
despithes me despithes Him that sent me." (Luk 10:16). Jesus even instructed His disciples, "And
whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your
feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and
Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. (MAR 6:11).
THE COMMISSION:
After calling His disciples and giving them authority, Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach,
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel." (MAR 16:15). "And as
ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand." (MAT 10:7)
The Lord also commanded them to perform the Sacraments. On Maundy Thursday, the Lord
established the Sacrament of the Eucharist, then He ordered them to do the same, "And he took
