Social-Emotional Observation

Introduction

For the social-emotional observation, I went back to the Discovery School. I really enjoyed my first observation there, so I was excited to go back. I was in the same classroom again, Miss Ortiz and Miss Julie’s classroom of four year old children. There were 2 adults that day—the head teacher and the assistant teacher. That day there were 13 out of 14 students there. Their schedule for the day was center time, morning circle time, outside play time, lunch, motor skills time, snack time, centers, and good bye circle time. I observed from the time children were dropped off until lunch time.

Non-Violent Problem Solving

I observed the teacher encouraging children to seek information by encouraging a child to find different ways to solve a puzzle. The head teacher told the child, “Maybe the puzzle piece should go a different way. Don’t you think so?” I also observed a teacher asking one of the children how she though other people would feel if she did not say hello to them. The child seemed to understand what the teacher meant and went to greet everyone in the class. The teacher did not want any child to feel left out and have it cause a problem.

Fostering Children’s Self-Esteem

I noticed when each child arrived for the day, the head teacher greeted the child and their parent at the door. She said hello and asked each child how they were feeling today. It seemed that the teachers got along well with all the parents and caregivers. They had conversations while the children took off their jackets and put their picture on the wall. A few children were absent the day before and the teachers told the children that they missed them. The teachers also said that they were an important part of the class and something was missing...
