Data Governance
As the core function of the Data Management Framework, Data Governance not only interacts with but also influences each of the surrounding ten data management functions. Figure 1 [1] shows a context diagram of Data Governance.
Since business data stewards are the trustees of enterprise data assets and data management professionals are expert custodians of these assets it is important to keep in mind that data management is the responsibility of both of these parties. In data governance, effective data management is dependent on an effective partnership between the data stewards and the data management professionals.
Data governance enables shared responsibilities for decision making while creating and supporting an integrated view of the data. While some decisions might be primarily IT driven with the guidance and input from the business stewards, other decisions might be primarily business driven with guidance and input from the IT professionals. Business stewards might make decisions on some items such as R&D funding, capital investments, information needs and specs. IT professionals might make decisions on some items such as DB architecture, data integration architecture, technical meta- data, and DW/BI architecture.
