Managing Diversity

Diversity is an integral part of the workforce in today’s generation. Organizations that use diversity as their strength have an edge over corporations who do not. Men and women provide insight from their ethnic cultures and backgrounds and allow the business to produce goods and services that tailor to different walks of life. For organizations conducting business in the 21st century, diversity among their employees is not only highly recommended, but also mandatory. The new generation consists of mixed ethnicities and backgrounds making it impossible for a successful business to discriminate. However, managers within a diverse setting need to have the tools to successfully manage each individual. Many organizations must take the necessary actions to train managers to deal with diversity among their employees.

Diversity is important in putting a work team together. Today, the workplace is made up of people from all different types of backgrounds. All of these people bring different skills and abilities with them. However, it is important that they are all working toward one specific goal. Managers can ensure work teams are diverse by hiring people based on skill level, which includes work experience as well as education. They can accommodate and support diversity. They can offer diversity training for all team members. They can create Personal Development Plans that has their personal diversity goals that can tie into the company’s diversity goals.

Discrimination is wrong and when a company fails to do their part when it comes to managing diversity can lead to lawsuits and other issues within a business. If a business does not have a diverse workplace this is a form of discrimination. People have the right to be treated fairly, honestly, and with respect regardless of the nationality, race, color, creed, or gender.
