Why College Education is Important to Me

Abstract

In today’s society, many individuals become unemployed because jobs either relocate or close down. Individuals that have a college degree are promoted or relocated to another state or department. Individuals that do not hold a degree are often laid off and end up being dependent on unemployment. Therefore, they struggle to provide the necessities for themselves or their families. This also makes it difficult for them to pursue other opportunities because most employers require more than a high school diploma. Many individuals return to school to improve their livelihood and to obtain a stable career. This essay will evaluate the importance of a college education. It will also discuss the advantages of having a college degree and on the other hand, the disadvantages and challenges of not having a college degree.

Why A College Education is Important to Me

As a young child, my parents always stressed about the importance of a college education. I did not understand this concept until I became an adult. A college degree is not something that an individual should choose to have; it is something that should be essential to their success. O’Neal Curry (2011) wrote an article on the 10 Reasons why higher education is important. Within this article he states, “A good education can be your way into a prosperous career. Many employers require people to fulfill certain educational requirements before they will consider hiring them. And in certain jobs, it’s a necessity to continue professional training and education in order to progress through your career. Your education can help increase the amount of money you’ll earn during your lifetime. By enabling it, you have opportunity for a better job or starting your career at a higher level.
