SUBJECT AND VERB AGREEMENT

1. The form of the verb must agree with its subject in person, whether the subject and verb of a sentence show that the author is making statement about himself (1st person), about the person he is speaking to (2nd person), or about some other person, place, or thing (3rd person).

Examples: I am going to Palawan. (1st person)

You should stay with me tonight. (2nd person)

He goes to school with his brother. (3rd person)

2. The form of a verb must agree with its subject in number whether the subject or verb shows that one thing is being discussed or more than one thing is being discussed.

Examples: Computers are used in almost every school.

The janitor is sleeping under the tree.

Dogs run in the park every morning.

Sheila wakes up at 9:00am.

3. The verb should agree with the original subject, not with the preposition.

Examples: Eagles in the forest are endangered.

The book beneath the shelves is old.

4. Compound subjects connected by conjunction “and” generally take plural form except when dealing with numbers or objects considered as one.

Examples: Steph and Rizon are the best of friends.

Pork and beans is one of my favorite foods.

5. In an inverted sentence, wherein the sentence starts with a preposition or with “there” and “here”, the subject comes after the verb.

Examples: On the bench on the playground, sit my classmates.

6. An intervening phrase will not affect the subject. (phrases that have including, as well as, along with, together with, in addition to)

Examples: Josh, as well as Derick, plans to take a walk in the park later.

Bears, including their cubs, hibernates during winter.

7. Indefinite pronouns when used as subjects require singular verbs. (anybody, anyone, everyone, nobody, no one, somebody, someone)

Examples: Someone from the crowd wants to come up the stage.

Nobody wants to go to the party.
