1. Did Mr. Greenberg violate any rules as a soldier? Isn’t the lack of clarity on the part of the commanding officers what caused the problem? What’s wrong with using a loophole in the system?

I believe Mr. Greenberg did violate a few rules as a soldier. The soldiers were trusted to take a leave day and use it wisely, which Mr. Greenberg didn’t. He abused the trust the officers had in him by not sticking around for whatever event he claimed to have gone to. I think the officers were quite clear with their expectations. Why would they give leave to soldiers if they weren’t spending it wisely? I suppose there isn’t anything wrong with using a loophole, but if someone trusts you to do something, and you say you did or will do it, then you should follow through.

2. Apply the various schools of thought, and see if you can fit Mr. Greenberg into one or more. As you do, think about the following excerpt from an editorial Mr. Greenberg wrote for the Wall Street Journal: “So, in order to stay out of the crosshairs of government regulators, companies are avoiding risks they might otherwise take to innovate or grow their businesses: “Keep your head down.”

I believe that Mr. Greenberg could be put into the school of ethical relativism because it seems as though he has different values and standards of right and wrong, and so, he did what he did because he thought it was okay.

3. Do you believe that a pattern established in youth surfaced as he was running AIG?

I believe so because since he wasn’t caught or punished as a youth, he believes that he can get away with certain things. Also, if he doesn’t get specific instructions, he feels as though he can interpret any instruction as how he wants to.

4. In a 2006 AP survey of adults, 33 percent said it is “okay” to lie about your age, although only to make yourself younger, not for purposes of underage drinking. What rationalization(s) are the 33 percent...
