Are Five Heads Better Than One: An Analysis
In the case of the team in Advert in charge of developing the commercial for their client’s 60 inch television, there were various issues preventing them from creating a product to their client’s liking. The first issue seen in the case is a lack of leadership and too much autonomy given by upper management. We see that Connor comes into the group with the experience of a leader, and demonstrates the qualities of an extraverted personality. The lack of clear leadership and autonomy causes Connor to become the group lead, and even though his ideas are not in tune with what the client desires, the team decides to go with it. Another issue that is apparent in the case is a clear lack of communication. While Derek had a different idea for the project, an idea which would have actually been conducive to what the clients wanted, his views are never communicated. This is a communication barrier which is partially caused by individual differences(Derek seems much more introverted than Connor) and the lack of leadership and autonomy granted to the team. Lastly, there is too much agreeableness in the group and a pressure to agree. Although Alexis initially started saying that “it might not be a good idea”, she quickly gives in to Conner and says he’s right. Derek does not even voice his own opinion because he feels pressure from his teammates, even though he had more experience working with their clients. All of these problems combine and augment each other to create the issue that the team faces.
