REFLECTION PAPER 1

My definition of freedom is the ability to express and say what ever you may feel like doing. There is also the rights of freedom and what that means to me. The rights of freedom is quite different than the definition of freedom. The rights of freedom is what the law and what politics dictate. The idea of what others believe freedom is and what policies have been placed to enforce these ideas. I think that as long as I live there will never be what is a true and factual understanding of what freedom is. Based on conversations within the class it is clear that many things play a role in defining freedom, for instance your religion, culture, race, age, beliefs, and just about anything else you can think about can contribute to the definition of that word.

The most expressed example of freedom today is the right to vote. I think this is so well advertised that its too redundant. Unfortunately though, this right I believe has lost its appeal. The right to vote is pretty much a joke based on the actual way that the vote is taken and the process of the vote. It seems that today in this age voting is not so much of a right anymore but a thing you have to do, a chore! Most think this is just a waste of time because no matter what you decide and vote for the majority rules and your choice is no longer needed or offered. Its like you can’t buy a sandwich and then eat it and then expect a refund. The vote is only a political choice of what party you want to win. Its not about what you really want because the others (members of the party) are the ones who choose for you. Is this really freedom? I think it’s a twist on freedom. The word freedom is used to convince you that its your right and you have to take advantage of that right. You are convinced that what they think is right is what is right and you need to be lead to believe that you had something to do with it when actually you had nothing to do with it at all.
