Question: How does globalization affect a manager’s people skills?

Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies and governments of different nations. It can also be seen as a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology.

This process has effects on the environment, culture, political systems, economic development and prosperity and on human physical well being in societies around the world.

In today’s world, a manager can be seen as someone who works with and through other people by coordinating their work activities in order to accomplish organizational goals. His job is not about personal achievement, it’s about helping others do their and become achievers. Even though the manager might have the traits of a good leader, people skills can be rather crucial and he might fall short as it relates to globalization within the office for the following reasons: -

• Workforce Diversity where there is more heterogeneous in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, age and other characteristics that reflect differences within the organization. Even employees at the same company may come from a variety of countries and cultures and have different ways of looking at things and approaching their work. Managers must respect diversity and might encounter difficulty in creating harmony with employees due to their various backgrounds which can be a great challenge.

• Culture – Staff would have came from various background and would have different morals, values and religious beliefs which might not be line with this organization and when given a task they may be reluctant to execute.
