The order in which organizations set up there interrelated groups in order to allow departments to function smoothly from the overall larger standpoint is there organizational structure. A successful organizational structure will ensure effective communication and coordination across all departments and managers within the organization. Structure includes the formal and informal aspects of relationships between employees, managers and directors (Ambrose & Schminke, 2003). There is no one size fits all, when selecting the model of structure to be used one must consider the type and size of their organization, the number of employees can determine the levels or cross levels of hierarchy. The type of organization will also play into what model to use; a sports team would not use the same structure model as a department store or an assembly plant. A successful organizational structure will mesh nicely with their organizational culture.

How organizational structure affects members

For the most part, members of an organization want to be involved in the decision making process. The order of hierarchy will determine just how much involvement each of the members will have, not only in making decisions but how involved they are on all projects. For a startup company, day to day activities must first be determined, than the hiring process begins. The human resources managers must hire competent people as those people might ultimately determine the success of the companies’ organizational structure. In this process, the HRM must first establish the hiring process, job descriptions, and responsibilities must be assigned accordingly and in line with accountability. To enable managers to clarify who is responsible for task performance, everyone must know who reports to whom.
