1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is a term used to describe the differences in demographic variables like; ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, gender, age, language and education. Diversity is valued because it brings about different and sometimes new ideas and perspectives in school, work, church, and in the society at large. Diversity is also valued because it creates and promotes different choices of food, entertainment, technology, science and lifestyle in general (Glen, 2013).

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is the act judging someone’s culture based on the expected standards and values of your own culture.  Ethnocentrism will make an individual judge others because of their religion, language, and customs. They will use their own culture as a measuring stick for morality and ethical standards. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to society because it sometimes leads to intolerance, prejudice and hatred for other people (Glen, 2013).

3. Define emigration and immigration.

The definition of emigration and immigration can sometimes be confusing because of the similarity. Emigration is the act of leaving your home country to reside in another. Immigration is the act of coming to live in a foreign country. To the people in your original home country you are an emigrant. To the people in the foreign country you move to, you are an immigrant.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?
