Antenna Types

Omnidirectional

The omnidirectional antenna; also known as the dipole antenna is one of the most common antennas out there which we used to be able to see. These antennas are attached to routers, cellphones, etc. They provide an equal radio frequency (RF) in all horizontal directions within a 2-dimensional plane. The horizontal beam width is always 360 degrees; however the vertical beam width is 7-80 degrees depending on the antenna. The advantage of this type of antenna is that it gives off a signal 360 degrees, but the disadvantage is that its vertical beam width is small and antenna placement needs to be carefully thought out. Omnidirectional antennas are typically used indoors due to their great 360 degree coverage.

Semidirectional

The semi directional antennas direct a RF signal in a particular direction and are used for short to medium range. The types of semi directional antennas are patch, panel, or Yagi devices. An example of this type of antenna in use would be on either side of two office buildings. Some advantages of semi directional antennas are that when used indoors they can reduce reflections and they can be installed high up on a wall and pointed at the area where the signal needs to be transmitted.

Highly-directional

The highly-directional antenna is used for point-point-communications, which means providing an RF signal across a long distance. Types of this antenna include parabolic dish which is your common Satellite TV dish and the grid antenna which is a...
