There are so many good things you can do with the Internet and yes finding any information is quick and makes life very easy for us who have access. There are countless ways to assess the values of information you find on the Internet, it just depends on what exactly you are looking for and how creditable you need the information you find to be. The following paragraphs are just a few of the things you can do to make sure that the websites you use are trusted and credible sites.

First things first, anyone with access to a server can publish anything on the web. It's important to identify the author of a web document and verify his or her qualifications to write on the topic. Here are some questions you can ask yourself when looking at the author. Is there an author listed? Is the document signed? Is contact information provided for the author? Or, is contact information provided for the institution or company with which the author is associated in order to determine the author's qualifications? Are the author's credentials provided? Is he or she qualified to write on this subject?

Inspect the websites URL. By examining a website’s URL (uniform resource locator, commonly called its web address), you can learn more about the type of website you're exploring and where the information comes from. Some components of a URL include: Host computer, domain name, and the directory path. The host computer server where a website is located, usually follows the “www.” The final few letters that follow the host computer name. Some common domains include: .edu- educational institution with ranges from legitimate university research to personal student pages. .net - network provider usually provides services to subscribing customers, such as EarthLink. .gov - government agency usually has official government information. .org - non-profit organization often like-minded individuals working for a common cause, may...
