A Short Life of MY Child

It was a cold, gloomy day in December 1986 in Columbia, South Carolina. I had just got out of the shower to get dressed, and take my daughter to see the pediatrician on post when, I heard a loud scream. The next thing was my former wife, and my mother running out the back door telling me to meet them at the Emergency room at Fort Jackson. I jumped into my clothes and drove extremely fast to the hospital with my mind racing with what is wrong with my baby girl. When I got there they already had her hooked up to all kinds of equipment, and were told by the physician that they were going to transport her to another hospital because they did not have the capabilities to treat her.

It all started on the evening July 7, 1986 when my former wife went into labor on her birthday and gave birth to my third daughter Samantha Elizabeth Taylor on July 8, 1986 while stationed in Nurnberg Germany. I was so excited, and could not wait for the arrival of her as well as her sisters Rebekah who was 4 and Caroline who was 3. After Samantha’s birth, the nurses got her weight, and measurements, and swaddled her in a blanket, and the nurse handed her to mommy to visit with a few minutes. I sat and rocked with her and sang to her Jesus Loves me over and over, and telling her that daddy, mommy and her sisters love her. She and I cuddled it seemed an hour before the nurse came to take her to the nursery so they could finish getting her cleaned up, and mommy could get some rest.

Well it was time for the big day, her well baby checkup which is when they check the weight, nose, eyes, lungs, and ask parents a lot of questions about what the baby is doing.
