Observation 2 - Making and decorating cakes

Date of Visit – 15th August 2012

Age of Child – 2 years and 11 months (35 months)

Aims

My aims for this visit are to observe Eva while she works with me to make and decorate cakes. Physically, I will not be focusing much on her gross motor skills; I will be looking at her fine motor skills. I want to see if she has good hand-eye coordination. Intellectually I want to see if she will learn by copying or imitating me and if she begins to ask questions. Socially I want to find out if she finds it hard to share.

Planning

To figure out where I will carry out my visit, I need to see if it is suitable to do a cooking activity at Eva’s house and if her mum is alright with the idea. If not, the visit will take place in my house, both in Ashton in Makerfield. It will take place on the 15th August 2012. I will need to purchase the ingredients to make the cakes with, I will need to ring Eva’s mum and see if she has an apron and a stool for Eva to use whilst cooking. If they are not accessible, I have them at my house which I will be able to let Eva use. I will also need the ingredients and products which I and Eva will use to decorate the cakes with, and cake cases to put the cakes in. Attached to my visit is a risk assessment to make sure Eva is safe at all times, including the possible risks and how I can avoid them. This activity is suitable for my child, as she will enjoy it and I have also thought ahead, from previous experience with my sister when she was younger, and decided to buy a readymade cake mix in a box, therefore Eva does not have a lot of hard work to do, so she can get the cakes in the oven quickly and decorate them. This activity will allow me to achieve my aims as it looks at the areas of the PIES I need to focus on.
