MOTIVATION AND EMOTION

1. Identify and describe three (3) common theories of motivation.

The three common theories of motivation are drive reduction, arousal, and incentive. Drive reduction theory is an early theory about how our physiology motivates us,, and that out behavior s motivated by our biological needs. A need may include things such as water, food or shelter. Our body also seeks homeostasis, a balanced internal state. When out of homeostasis, we have a need that creates either primary or secondary drives (biological needs or learned drives). The second theory of arousal states that we seek an optimum level of arousal or amusement. This arousal level can be measured by different physiological tests. Each of us has a different need for excitement and we are motivated by activities that will help us achieve this level. The last theory called incentive theory is known as the opponent process theory of motivation.
