KPOP: A healthy obsession.. or not?

Joanalyn Dino

“I want nobody, nobody but you.” I’m sure you all have heard the song Nobody by Wonder Girls. K-Pop or Korean Pop had been viral around the world especially here in the Philippines. Different idol groups already had a sold out concert here and more to come. A lot of fans from different age brackets adore and enjoy their catchy songs, colorful music videos, trendy fashion, and fresh looks.

For some, being a fan of this KPOP fever does not stop in buying albums and going to concerts. Some tend to imitate their idols through looks and styles. Thus, narrowing us down to the point where it becomes a harmful element. For example, fan girls would starve themselves just to have enough money for them to buy their favourite group’s merchandise and every item their bias endorses. They also try to look like an actual Korean by dressing in the same manner as their idols and some even invest time just to study the Korean language. They digest the Korean Culture more than their own.

People, especially the younger generation should at least balance this kind of obsession because it does not only affect them but also their country. Patronizing foreign music instead of our very own is economically unhealthy. You, as a Filipino should be proud of what we have because it’s something we could call our own. K-Pop should just serve as an inspiration on how we want our own music to be patronized by the other countries.
