Writing Assignment on Chapters 2 & 3

Chapter 2

1. In the colonization period men and women had more of an equal role in production. Everyone in the family helped out and it was more of a economic unit. Mostly everything was produced at home itself so there wasn’t a big need to go out much. There was specialization and division of labor. Of course the men did more of the harder labor like agriculture and occasional trade and women did the more lighter work . Even children helped out so more children were bore at the time. There wasn’t much government involvement. During the industrialization things started to change women started to play less of a role in production they would only work in the mills till they got married once married their role was take care of the household and children. During this period production starting happening outside the house and things were produced on a greater scale in places like mills. The amount of even single women that worked wasn’t that high but once married it was looked down on to work. However it was different for black women they would have to work even after being married to make ends meet due to the times. Furthermore it was even more different for immigrant families that moved to America for a better future sometimes their whole family worked, it was common for the married woman to work for the children having to pick working over school for the family. By this point the American family was where the male was the breadwinner and the woman was the homemaker who took care of his domestic needs. Towards the end of this time is when this concept really became the way of living. Married woman working was looked as two things either she was being selfish and to career oriented if she worked or cause the man of the house didn’t make enough. Either way it wasn’t a good perception. The middle class white wives were the stay at home moms while the husbands worked and the notion was the man got paid...
