Common Ground Essay

My two concentrations are Business and Communications. I personally believe that Communications plays a huge role in life, both professionally and socially, especially in Business. Communications is based on being able to establish and maintain successful relationships both personally and professionally and being sure that your communication and the way you are perceived is both successful and appropriate. Success and appropriateness is huge in Business and being able to build relationships and being able to network with others is what makes people in the business world successful. I will further research the specific areas that Business and Communications are related in and issues that integrate the two areas while making relating these connections to my future goals.

After completing the concentration worksheets from our previous assignment, I was able to look more in depth into my concentration and noticed how related they both are. According to the definition of the discipline, communications focuses on teaching students how communication processes create, maintain, and transform identities, relationships, workplaces, and communities. These types of attributes are required in business in order to be successful. The key words in that definition that links communications with business are relationships and workplaces. From what I have learned throughout my college education in business, building close relationships with your peers, co-workers, and superiors is extremely important in order to grow successfully in whatever business you are in. Having people who can vouch for your work and being able to connect with someone helps with future opportunities and in giving you credible references that can speak for you and help steer you to better opportunities.
