Appendix EIdentifying Components of Argumentation
• Choose an appropriate topic for a research paper.
• Identify examples of bias, rhetorical devices, argumentation, and effective counterarguments.
1. Course Preparation
• Read the course description and objectives.
• Read the facilitator’s biography and post your own.
2. Readings
• Read Appendix A.
• Read Ch. 1 of Axia College’s Writing Style Handbook. Refer to Appendix B for formatting tips.
• Read Stages of the Research Process and Bias, Rhetorical Devices, and Argumentation on the student Web site.
3. Check Point: Research Paper Topic
• Resources: Appendix A, Appendix C, and the Center for Writing Excellence
• Grammar Guide.
• Review Appendix C.
• Select a topic for your research paper. Here are possible topic selections:
Affirmative Action
Colonization
Consumerism
Culture
Drugs
Education
Ethics
Gun Control
Identity
Immigration
Literacy
Media
Politics
War
Technology
• Submit the topic for your facilitator’s approval. If you write about a topic your
facilitator has not approved, your paper will receive a zero. You may ask the instructor to approve a topic not on the list if you like. Be aware that your topic must have two clearly defined sides. Simply choosing “politics” or “war” is not sufficient. You must explain what the two sides of the issue are.
• Write 100 to 200 word proposal for the topic of your final paper. The topic must include
o A topic for a persuasive paper
o A brief description of the two sides of the argument
o A statement of which side of the argument you will support
Tips and Hints:
• Your final paper will be a persuasive paper. Your topic should be a subject that has two clearly defined sides.
• Your topic should be narrow enough to focus on issue. For example if you choose the topic of education then you must focus on a single issue of education such as the pros and cons of homeschooling.
