The Crocodiles ( DIE VORSTADTKROKODILE)

Cine Europa, the annual tradition of bringing quality European films to Manila, was back in Cagayan de Oro for the fourth time last September 23-25 at the Rodelsa Hall. All the students from FOLA classes were required to watch a German film, “The Crocodiles”.

My first impression when the film started was negative. I thought it would be boring because we have to read the subtitles to understand the movie, but I was wrong. Even without reading or noticing the subtitles, I could directly relate to the actions. The first part of the movie was when the gang challenged Hannes, a ten year old boy growing up with his single mother, through going up on a roof to get the necklace with a silver crocodile chain that symbolizes the gang. The chain was like the logo of the Crocs shoes.

There’s a part of the movie that was unfair. It was when Kai, a young boy who was wheelchair bound and unable to even run away when things get hot, wanted to join to the gang because of the reason that his mother will take him to a school where special children are taken care of if he will not have friends in their place, but then when the gang met him, they immediately discouraged each other about his physical disabilities and disapproved on letting him join. Later on, when things got difficult to the gang. Kai was suddenly became the great interest to the gang. They let him join in because they realized that they must have him because he can help them on the mission in beating the criminal gang. With his help and typically youthful imagination and courage, the group had set off to solve the case and took on the apparently unbeatable criminal gang.

The movie showed a meaningful story for us. It made us realize that even at worst or at happy times, friends should always be together and accept each other’s weaknesses. A group should take responsible in every mistakes and problems that come out because it’s a challenge that...
