Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to select a process performed daily by the writer but want to spend less time doing. This paper commented on the factors that affect the process design, build a metric data table to show data such as time versus activity, identified time as the metric used to measure the process and provided a flowchart that illustrates the process flow of the writer preparing for work.

Introduction

“A process is any part of an organization that takes inputs and transforms them into outputs that, it is hoped, are of greater value to the organization than the original inputs” (Chase, Jacob & Aquilano, 2006, p. 154). A process can be used in or outside the workplace. The writer’s flowchart outlines steps involved in preparing for work. Mind Tools indicates that “(f)low charts are easy-to-understand diagrams showing how steps in a process fit together.” Mind Tools also noted that “the act of mapping a process out in flow chart format helps you clarify your understanding of the process, and helps you think about where the process can be improved.” In this paper, the writer will outline factors that affect the process design, design a metric data table, and indicate metric used to measure the process.

Factors That Affect the Process Design

“Process design includes the selection of appropriate technology, sizing the process over time, the role of inventory in the process, and locating the process” (Chase et al., 2006, p. 24).

The following factors could affect the process design:

a) Did the writer iron clothes the night before?

b) Did the writer prepare/pack breakfast and lunch?

These factors could affect the writer’s process design in preparing for work. If the tasks above are not completed the night before, it will take the writer more time to prepare for work.
