Illegal Immigration

We have created a society in which breaking the law is accepted, overlooked, and even rewarded by not only accepting illegal immigrants into our communities but making them comfortable by spending billions of dollars a year on services for them. Besides the fact that the estimated 11.3 million (Center for Immigration Studies,Overview,2008) illegal immigrants cost the United States between $10 billion (Camarota, 2004) dollars each year they also create a society with higher crime rates, more traffic, and overcrowded often bilingual schools making it much harder for American children to obtain a quality education. Reducing illegal immigration is an attainable goal as well as offering citizenship to people who that come to America to be contributing legal immigrants. New immigration reform laws put in place by our government should be focusing on how to remove illegal immigrants from our country, while offering citizenship to the deserving immigrants who choose not to break the law but to enter and remain here legally.

Although we can never be sure of the exact number, the government estimates there are 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants currently residing in America. The rise in illegal immigration in recent years is contributing to lowering the quality of life for the American people. States that have been affected most by illegal immigration are California, Arizona, and Texas. According to the U.S Census Bureau of the 3.8 million people living in the City of Los Angeles, at least 928.416 are illegal, which accounts for over 24% of the city’s entire population (U.S. Census Bureau.2009). Because illegal immigrants are undocumented, they cannot work here legally, which also prevents them from obtaining jobs that allow them to pay taxes, and receive medical benefits.
