In slow economic times, employers are aware that an applicant will misrepresent job qualifications in order to secure employment. Employers realize that it is their responsibility to ensure the safety of its employees and reduce any violent occurrences during business hours. It has been established that by implementing tools to improve the personnel selection process, train employees in risk management, and initiate fair compensation guidelines can help reduce aggressive behavior in the workforce, and create a better working environment.

A business can assist in protecting their employees from aggressive behavior by improving the application and recruitment process. In order to ensure efficiency in the workplace, a business would need a comprehensive picture of the capabilities and knowledge of an applicant. According to the United States 2002 FBI report, there are over 500,000 job applicants claiming to have college degrees. During a recent college survey, 95% of students stated they would lie to get a job with 41% of those same students stated they have already done so. During this same year, the hiring index study for ADPs’ Screening and Selection Services reported that over 40% of individual applicants showed education and employment history discrepancies with their resumes. Therefore, it is important for a business to properly validate the application and screening process to ensure the hiring of qualified employees (Matejkovic, 2006).

Assessment tests are business strategies used to help reduce the amount of unqualified applicants applying for positions. This employment screening process helps identify and reduce the risk of hiring a potentially aggressive applicant, and assists in determining suitability for a particular position.
