Abstract

Brazil is a country filled with elaborate culture, traditions and religions from every region of the globe. The country has suffered through many trials and tribulations throughout its history from its battle for independence in 1822 to its poor government configuration up until a half century ago. In recent years the government has been reconstructed and the country has begun to make a positive turn in economic standing. Education has risen, poverty has decreased and Brazil still captures the aspect of true culture many Americans long to be a part of whether it be the Carnival celebration in the springtime, or the country’s Fifa World Cup soccer pride the country displays every four years.

The Most Diverse Nation on Earth, Brazil

Brazil is claimed to have the largest population in Latin America and ranks number five among all countries of the world. It borders every country in South America except Chile and Ecuador. Its size is comparative to the United States, excluding Alaska. With an estimated 203 million inhabitants, Brazil is filled with one of the most diverse cultures and traditions known to man. Although it is the largest landmass in Latin America, more than eighty percent of the population lives in condensed urban environments within two hundred miles of the Atlantic Coast.

Their struggle for independence began in the early 1500’s when Portuguese explorers, led by Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered the land and exploited its recourses that includes: brazilwood, sugarcane, coffee beans and gold mining. Amerindians were enslaved and shortly after Africans began to be brought over as slaves as well. Much like the United States, slave trading became the normal way of life for many Brazilians during these early developing years.
