The Ideal High School

Administrative Structure

Organization

In my ideal high school, I would create a departmentalized organization, creating individual academic departments. Each department would be assigned a hired department head that had experience within the department that he/she oversaw. This would be a rotating position that would change every few years. Each member of that specific department would answer directly to that department head. The school would be organized using a chain of command format where teachers and staff answered to their department head. The department head would then answer to the assistant principal. The Assistant Principal would answer to the Principal, and the Principal would answer to the Superintendent of the district.

The majority of the authority within each individual department would be given to the department head, creating a decentralized school model. This way, the professionals with the experience within their field would be able to respond to the issues that arose. Overall authority over the daily school business and employees, however, would lie with the Principal.

We would also strive to create an environment of participation by allowing the staff and stakeholders to be involved in the decision making process within the school (Participatory Management). We would allow for outside input through the use of polls and surveys, as well as involve all teachers and staff in as many decisions as possible and necessary. By allowing the staff to participate in the decision making for the school, it gives them ownership over the school, and helps to intrinsically motivate them to assist in creating a successful school environment.
