UNIT ONE: OUR HEALTH

1. The meaning of Health

- A state of complete, physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

2. The child’s concept of Health and illness.

a. Pre- Logical Explanations (2-6 yrs)

- Phenomism describes how children explain illness immaturely and are unable to explain the cause of an illness.

- Contagion is when children believe they can get sick just by being in proximity to objects in their surroundings without touching them.

- Immanent Justice is the belief that negative consequences are punishment for misbehavior.

b. Concrete Logical Explanations (7-10 yrs)

- Contamination is the cause of illness is attributed either to the child physical contact with the contaminant.

- Internalization is the illness described in terms of being within your body, the cause being an external one.

c. Formal Operational Explanation (12-15)

- Physiological is the description of illness in terms of internal organs and functions.

- Psychophysiologic is the awareness of how our emotional states can affect our bodily functions.

3. Stages of cognitive mental development and how they affect concept learning and concept attainment.

a. Stage 1 (Sensory-motor stage)

- During this stage a child learns through movement and by using his/her senses. Object Permanencies the ability of the child to know that an object still exist even when out of sight.

b. Stage 2 ( Pre- Operational Stage)

- The child is not yet able to conceptualize abstractly and needs concrete physical situations. Objects are classified in simple ways especially by important features. Animism is the tendency of the...
