The Affect of Leadership and Management on Networking

Baderman Island Resort, like most organizations, employs individuals to be in positions of authority to oversee certain sectors of the company. Some in these positions are referred to as Leaders and others as Managers. Despite the two titles often used interchangeably, they hold quite different meanings. It is these differences between the two that affect networking at the resort.

A network is a structured integration of multiple individuals with multiple connections working on a seamless integration of collaborative activities. These types of structures can be informal or formal and are mostly intersectoral and based in a specific policy area or problem. It is a rare occurrence for a network such as that of Baderman Island Resort to operate without some degree of leadership.

Leadership involves vision. It focuses on the road ahead and the potential of an individual or organization. Leadership strives to assist someone or something to make progress.

Management involves the here and now. Management focuses on handling the task currently at hand. It involves immediate resolution of an issue or task. Management focuses on the short term whereas leadership focuses on the long-term.

Many argue that management is doing things right whereas leadership is doing the right things (Bennis & Nanus,1997). In referencing the opinion of those who envision leadership and management as two distinct philosophies, Northouse (2007) wrote “to manage means to accomplish activities and master routines, whereas to lead means to influence others and create visions for change.” On the one hand, management is a collaboration of task-oriented behavior focused on increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of an organization. On the other hand, leadership is a process in which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2007, 3).
