SHORT ESSAY: Answer THREE of the following questions. (5 marks each) All answers must be in your own words (except for terms, which you can and should use).

1. Explain a study in which babies are shown ‘magical’ (impossible) events. What is the purpose of these studies? How are they conducted? What do they find?

2. Imagine that a friend has confided to you that she is seriously considering suicide, but first made you promise you would not tell her secret. Briefly explain stages 1-5 of Kohlberg’s theory of moral reasoning and give a reason for telling (or not) based on each stage.

3. Provide an analysis of the case study presented below. Analysis may involve description (e.g., “this behaviour is an example of [psychological term] because…”) or explanation (e.g., “Manny behaves this way because [explanation based on psychological theory or research]”). Present four interpretations of any aspect(s) of Manny’s behavior or personality using any of the theories or research on personality (be sure to explain the connection to course material).

Manny has just been fired from his job in sales. This is the second time he has been fired; in both cases the reason was conflict with his boss, which resulted in some shoving. Manny blamed his bosses for starting the ‘fight’ and accused them of being incompetent. Manny was never particularly interested in sales, but chose it over his real passion, music, because his father had been in sales and always pushed Manny to follow in his footsteps. His father had been a strict parent when Manny was a child and even used physical punishment when Manny was “disobedient.” His mother battled depression and was often ‘distant’ during his childhood.
