There is no doubt that Tom, like Frank and his co-conspirators, harbors an ambition of one day being a key figure in OSIM Group and then later on in ` SFS/Shilo Investment bank. Tom must not hold back his ambition because of the on-going organization politics he has just realized. The on-going organization politics is very normal for any organization undergoing a transition brought up buy a takeover of this magnitude. With his recently acquired strategic planning skills, Tom possesses at the right time the key to culture change. He therefore needs to use his expert power to reshape OSIM’s business ethic to his advantage.

Tom must realize that the current happenings at OSIM Group are employees’ response to on-going organization politics. The response to the politics will differ at different levels of the organization. For top management, there is increased anxiety and stress due to fear of change. It’s highly likely, the response of staff lower than the VPs is positive since they see opportunities of advancement coming with the takeover. This means that Tom will easily get following in his role as strategic planning director from employees lower than VPs. The stumbling block to his strategic planning initiative is from VPs upwards. However Tom has to take comfort in that the top management isn’t unanimous in rejection of strategic planning; the OSIM president and SFS/Shilo board chairman are of the planning initiative.

Tom is rejoining OSIM Group just four months post-takeover. As someone who had worked at OSIM Group for nine years, before embarking on the management program, he knows well the characters of the top management. For those that he doesn’t know well, this scenario offers him the opportunity to figure out who is a valuable resource to compliment his ambition. It’s essential that gets right his facts right with regards to top management characters before he meets the Bob Cedarholm.
