Introduction
Developing a clear overarching firm strategy is a critical aspect of effective management. To achieve this, firms rely on managers to assess internal firm strengths and weaknesses and external threats and opportunities in the business environment.
Instructions:
Create a SWOT analysis for your assigned firm. Remember that strengths and weaknesses are internal to the firm and opportunities and threats are in the external environment. To determine which is which, ask yourself: Do the decisions I make as a manager predominantly affect this situation (if so, it’s a strength or weakness), or do outside forces have the most significant effect (if so, it’s an opportunity or threat)? Identify at least 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses AND identify at least 2 opportunities and 2 threats.
Under each opportunity and threat, distinguish between general AND firm-specific reasons it is promising/threatening (i.e., firm-specific reasons should describe how your firm is uniquely positioned compared to the other firms in your industry to take advantage of the opportunity –or be harmed by the threat). You may also state whether you think the overall opportunity/threat is firm specific or not, but be sure to state whether each reason for pursuing/avoiding it is firm specific or not (e.g., the Japanese interest in PEI due to the required reading of Anne of Green Gables in schools is a firm-specific reason for pursuing the Tokyo expansion opportunity).
Bullet point or outline format is fine, but under each SWOT clearly describe how you know it is a strength, weakness, opportunity, or threat. Points will be deducted for ignoring relevant information. For example, if you list the Tokyo expansion as one of your opportunities you should include bullet points of information underneath that explain why Japan is a promising option specifically for PEIPC
Supporting information under each strength and weakness must also describe specifically how it makes PEIPC...
