I chose to read the chapter book Charlotte’s Web. The book was written by E.B. White with illustrations by Garth Williams and was first published in 1952. I can remember reading this book as a child taking me back to when I was a few years younger and my grandfather was alive working on the farm and learning to feed the pigs. I wasn’t much of a reader so most likely I read the book for a class.

The author of the book creates a realistic setting starting out by letting the reader know that it is morning time during breakfast and that it is spring giving you a good sense of what time of year it is. “The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime (pg. 1)”. After reading further you realize that the story is taking place on a farm probably in the country.

The story is written with great detail concerning the characteristics of things surround the characters. “Wilbur amused himself in the mud along the edge of the brook, where it was warm and moist and delightfully sticky and oozy (pg. 11)” is a good example of the wording used to describe how the author depicts things in the book which in this case is mud being sticky and oozy. In this book the animals talk which obviously doesn’t happen in real life but the author gives different animals somewhat of a dialect as they talk setting the animals apart from one another and thus giving the animals a sense of personality. A good example of this would be when Wilber is talking to the goose and the goose says "Probably-obably-obably about half-past eleven,(pg.30)” like the goose has a speech problem. I think that this really helps the story along giving you characters instead of just animals talking to one another.

The last thing that catches my eye that the author does to make the location realistic is tell how a farm actually works and what happens at a farm. Instead of just saying that...
