Diversity

I always took proud in the way I interact with different cultures, age groups, backgrounds, religious, and even individuals of the opposite sex. So it comes to me naturally to want to meet other people in this diverse world we live in. When I first moved to Charlotte, NC last January 2012. I was offered a position working with a diverse group of people. The company was based out of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. So naturally they brought over workers from that area. I interviewed with a Female Dominican, Female Puerto Rican and a Caucasian male. One of their questions to me was “How do you feel working with a diverse group of people”? The Puerto Rican female states since their first language was Spanish, they normally speak Spanish most of the day and wanted to know how would I adapt to that kind of environment. I explained I had no problems learning more about their culture and I think this will give be a great experience for me. I worked there for about a month before a better opportunity came along. Everyone in the office spoke English, but majority of their primary language was Spanish and they used it about 90% of the time. We had about 3 African Americans. 3 Caucasian/White male/female and a Cuban worker. So they were strong about Diversity and not looking at race but qualified individuals to perform the job. I was even learning Spanish myself and they were willing to teach me how to speak it and cook dishes from their culture. This was their corporate office and they generate millions of dollars a year during EDI for Healthcare physicians and doctors office.

There are things I would do to expand my diversity understanding. One thing is learning a foreign language. I took Spanish in high school, but forgot everything but my numbers. So the first thing I would like to do is learn a foreign language and try to incorporate it in my daily life. Since I am in healthcare we have all types of patients.
