Unilever halves size of deodorant cans in sustainability drive
Mon, 4 Feb 2013 | By Angus Montgomery
Unilever is rolling out a new deodorant aerosol can design, which it says lasts the same length of time as previous cans, despite only being half the size.
The company says this is the first major redesign of aerosol packaging since the 1960s.
The new 75ml ‘compressed’ cans will be launched for female deodorants under the Sure, Dove and Vaseline brands, and replaces the previous 150ml cans.
Unilever says it has reduced the size of the cans by halving the amount of propellant used.
It says this will reduced the carbon footprint by an average of 25 per cent per can. This is because the cans will use less aluminum, and more will fit on to a pallet, reducing transportation demands.
Richard Swannell, director of design at waste reduction group WRAP, says, ‘The new aerosols represent a step-change in the aerosol category.
‘Through the Courtauld Commitment we have encouraged packaging innovation and these new aerosols deliver both impressive packaging and transport savings.’
Unilever says 80 per cent of UK and Ireland consumers prefer aerosol to roll-on deodorant and 19 million cans of female deodorant are used in the UK each year.
