Hopes and Dreams

The novel Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The story is set in America around early 1930s - the time it was suffering the Great Depression. One of the themes of this book is dreams and hopes. George, Lennie and Curley’s wife have their own dream which can help them survive, even if they can never become real.

Of all the character in the novel, George’s dream of owning a farm with Lennie is the most dominant. His dream is to be free and have the control of his own life. The dream gives George hope to work hard and wait for one day that he will be independent. Dream to George is the kinetic energy to keep him going on and never give up. The dream is vital to him, but all of these ended when Lennie killed Curley’s wife. George will not be able to stay in the ranch any more. George’s life changes after the death of Curley’s wife and Lennie. Without Lennie, his dream never comes true.

All he wants is to tend rabbits, he would always get excited so about being able to take care of rabbits. The dream is not big, but it is the only things which can be remembered in his mind and help him to survive. All of these ended by Lennie’ death, George killed Lennie out of love, so that his death will be painless and happy.

The no name women, Curley’s wife’s dream is also unrealistic. Being a famous movie star is a dream of Curley’s wife. When she was young, one day she met a man who is in the pictures. He tells her that he will put her in the movie. She waits for his letter but never...
