Mark Julius was diagnosed as a highly-functional child with Down syndrome.
Down syndrome or Down's syndrome, (also known as trisomy 21), is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British physician who described the syndrome in 1866. The condition was clinically described earlier in the 19th century by Jean Etienne Dominique Esquirol in 1838 and Edouard Seguin in 1844. Down syndrome was identified as a chromosome 21 trisomy by Dr. Jérôme Lejeune in 1959. Down syndrome in a fetus can be identified through chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis during pregnancy or in a baby at birth.
Based on my observation, Julius has the ability to count properly from 1 to 10. He can also follow the teacher’s instruction. But later on forget what is being taught. He has a short memory span.
Julius can write on the board the numbers from 1 to 10 respectively but has to be prompted also in counting.
He can fairly remember the things being taught when asked to recall them but later on able to participate with the flow of discussion. He manifests delay in focusing most of the time. He is easily interrupted when new faces are around.
