The Cross by Scott Mariani

The Cross is the second book instalment in the Vampire Federation Series. It is about Vampires and humans fighting against each other in which they find out they all have just a common enemy, the Ubervampyrs (descent of vampires) and form a temporary truce in order to survive against the Ubervampyrs deadly forces. As the title suggests it also focuses on the hunt, use and origin of a cross carved artefact that has the power to disintegrate vampires. There is a lot of fascinating things surrounding the origin of the cross and the genesis of vampires. The book features all the content a good and satisfying book needs, betrayal, deception, trickery, love, compassion, greed and drama.

Even though you haven’t read the first book yet, the cross picks up where the first book ended and because the plot is not that all connected to the first book it is totally understandable. Scott G. Mariani gradually introduces the characters throughout the chapters. Even though some characters only appear in one chapter he makes a story for the character for readers to fully understand how that minor character’s path came to cross with a major character. The cross is written in an informal way. It also contains some foul language (due to it being an adult’s book) but not as much as the first book. I have read about 5 of Mariani’s books (and I can say they are all good) and have observed a writing pattern. Every few chapters another character’s story or a different group’s story appears and that continues until they eventually all meet up. But before Mariani changes to another character’s part of the story, he leaves the last chapter into a cliff-hanger sort of state leaving you anxious and thinking of what’s going to happen next. The cross resembles a horror book. Some of the horrors are humans chased for game, slain and drained of their blood by vampires.
