Born a Performer

In my 4-year-old eyes the radiant sun seemed massive as it gleamed down on the glistening salty ocean of Myrtle Beach. My exuberant, slender mother held my dainty hand as we sauntered up and down the beach scouring for seashells.

“Come and eat girls!” My dad shouted from the restaurant. I heard my baby brother behind my dad wail of hunger.

My mom and I scurried up to the cabana hand-and-hand to eat dinner as a family. As we approached my dad and brother, the music blared from the nearby band. Instantly, I could not help myself from grinning ear to ear. I felt the music fill up until my entire body vibrated with sound. As we walked to our table, I tried to escape my mom’s hand and dance to the music that was exploding inside of me. “No honey, we need to eat now.” My mom insisted. We strode to the table nearest the live-band and I reluctantly took a seat next to my brother, Alec.

My steaming hot chicken fingers and fries were placed right in front of me. Despite my growing hunger, I could not concentrate eating; all I wanted to do was dance to the intriguing music of the live-band. I watched my starving brother as he shoved fry after fry into his mouth. As my mom left to go to the bathroom behind the bar she asked, “Do you need to use the bathroom, sweetie?” “No mom, I will wait here.” I responded. As my mother left, and my father tended to my brother, whom had fries encircling his mouth, I quietly snuck under the table until I reached the stage.

I could feel adrenaline sprinting through my veins as I jumped onto the stage with the musicians rocking out to the beat of the drums. Almost magically, I felt as though this is where I was meant to be. I had no control of the numbness my body encountered as my tiny feet danced to the rhythm. My heart felt as though it would explode out of my chest with every step I took. The people dining at the restaurant began noticing my daring dance moves....
