1. Introduction: Global factors impact on Irish business

Businesses are affected by competitors and also by an external environment. Global factors can shape and have either a bad or a positive influence on the business activities, leading to their failure or success. Those factors could be related to changes in social structures, changes in government laws and regulations, changes in the global economy, changes in government policies, etc. Since Ireland joined the European Union in 1973, the Irish business environment has changed radically. Being part of the European Union has improved not only how the Irish work, travel and shop but also their business way of buying and selling their goods and services and the quality of their environment. Besides of the difficult financial period Ireland is experiencing now with the recession, being part of EU means having the right tools to take advantage of improving economically, being confident that recovery is possible. 2.
