The American Gangster movie’s setting was derived around the 1970’s in Harlem New York, about a police detective who works to take down the drug empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin kingpin that was running drugs into the country from the Middle East. This film has three highlighted themes that made the audience love it.

The themes are as follows: legitimacy, police corruption and respect. Although in the film Frank Lucas could have cared less about legitimacy due to him not ending his life of crime until he was caught. The film features corrupt police, where the parallel is broken down with Richie Roberts who was righteously seeks justice but with overwhelming deceit. The respect theme came into play with Frank Lucas needing to stay in total power. He would kill to maintain his respect, asserting his self as a powerful character which made him very important. These themes made the characters in American Gangster have significant purpose, more than a normal film because they made the actors in the film outstanding.

Frank Lucas was a man who was introduced into the drug business by working for a drug kingpin by the name Bumpy Johnson, who died from a heart attack, after Bumpy’s death Frank rose to be the new king pin. Blue magic is being supplied by Frank after hearing the stories of cheap drugs from the service men that returned from Vietnam, in return Lucas decided to cut out the middle man, and buy the drugs and buy his drugs straight from the producers in Thailand.
