Messages

I think there are several messages that the author wants to communicate or bring forward to us through the book ‘The Giver’.

One of which is self sacrifice, for example when Jonas planned to leave the community he brought baby Gabriel with him because he found out that Gab was going to be released (killed) if he stayed. He knew that if he escaped with a baby it would be harder to hide and that he is more likely to get caught even so he stilled did it anyway because he had a strong sense of justice and responsibility so he sacrificed himself for the sake of others another example is when he was assigned the job the receiver of memories, I personally thought that the receiver of memory is more of a self sacrificing job than an honourable job since Jonas had to bear all the horrible, painful memories and hurts himself, so that the community wouldn’t have to go through all of that pain and horror.

Another message that the author tried to point out to us is that ‘Can a utopia world/community really exist?’ Can there really be a world where EVERYONE is happy with what they have and what’s going on in their life. Which leads us to think about how Jonas’s community runs/works and whether it really is a perfect community or not. Is it really the best thing for everyone to not experience all the many emotions in life, never truly knowing what real happiness or sadness is, never knowing what their goal in life is or what life really means to them. Is it really a good thing for them to not see diversity and multiculturalism, no self opinion or thoughts, no differences or freedom. Is having everything the same really the best for everyone?

Furthermore I think the author is trying to tell us that our lives are being controlled and restricted more than we would like it to be, for example in The Giver the twelves where assigned jobs according to their personalities, habits, behaviour and daily lifestyles. If you look at how we get our jobs in our world it’s...
