1. What are the distinctions among philosophy, ethics, morals, and values, and why are these important concepts for modern-day business managers? (based on Business Ethics text Chapter 1; tied to course competencies 3 and 4)

Ethics, morals, and values are very much distinctive from each other, however, they are also interrelated. Values are core, self chosen beliefs that an individual’s actions or attitudes are motivated by. Peoples’ values are in many cases very independent of others. Values are what drives and motivates a person’s behavior. Ethics is the branch of philosophy that dictates what is right from wrong. One who displays ethical behavior is always doing the right things and knows the difference between good and bad practices. Morals are judgments, standards, and rules of what “good” conduct is in society. Morals guide people on basic values to model good behaviors.

The concepts of ethics, morals, and values are so important for modern day business managers because they together formulate the impression that a consumer may have for the organization. Business managers need to demonstrate ethical behaviors that model their morals and values. Ethical managers are responsible for fulfilling promises that are made to customers and employees alike, which therefore creates a more positive working atmosphere and loyal, happy customers.

2. Compare and contrast common law v. civil law legal systems. Which system is preferable as an international business manager? Why? (Based on Legal Challenges text Chapter 2; tied to course competencies 1 and 2)

Common law systems originated from England and are primarily in use in the United States with the exception of Louisiana. With common law systems, laws are continuously evolving as well as being amended by new laws passed by the legislature.
