1a. He is hypothesizing a negative correlation between x and y because as development increases, religiosity decreases.

Ch 8 HW
1F. His conclusion is wrong because Pearson’s r and R –square are different. He needs to square r so that he can examine the relationship between the independent and dependent variable. If he squares -.7- he will get an R-square value that will show that approx. 49% of religiosity variation can be explained by economic development.
3.A. The regression equation is yhat=ahat+bhat(x)+e example on page 189
Y=32+26=60/2=30 x=0
Y=26+22=48/2=24 30-24=6 20+16=36/2=18 14+10=24/2=12 8+4=12/6=6
There is a six mile decrease for y for every 10 unit change for x; therefore a 1 unit change in x there is a -.6 change in y. Regression coefficient is -.6.
3B. The y intercepts tells me that census blocks with 0 percent blacks are usually located about 30 miles from the hazardous waste facilities. 30 miles would be the average distance in this case.
3C. 30-.6(15)=21 miles for 15% black and 30-.6(25)=15 miles for 25% black
3D. 94% of the variation in the DV (distance to facility) will be explained by the IV (percent black).
