Assessment and testing policy

Introduction

In any educational institution, assessment and testing is very important to enable decisions to be made about student’s achievements. The tests are designed to bring changes in the student and also measure the extent to which instructional objectives and goals are being achieved.

Aims and objectives of assessments and tests

There are various reasons as to why tests are used in education programs. These include:-

* Used to measure behaviour change objectively.

* Enables education managers to make decisions concerning education programs and students learning through feed backs.

* Used to find out if a learner has acquired a given skills.

* Used for placement to determine the entry level of learners and hence used to determine the level at which instruction should begin.

* To determine ones future.

* Helps predict future outcomes or behaviour especially academic performance.

* Used to determine the extent to which the instructional goals have been achieved and whether learner can be promoted to the next level or not.

Types of assessments to be done and the frequency

The tests to be done in the institution shall be:-

i. Achievement tests: - These are designed to measure what knowledge and skills you have achieved after exposure to certain material. This shall be conducted through take home assignments and end of term exams.

ii. Aptitude tests: - These indicate future potentiality of what one is capable of doing in a given environment.

iii. Speed tests: - Determines how fast one can perform task.

iv. Power tests: - Tests that are scaled with various levels of difficulty to test how high one can go on in answering the questions.

These tests will be conducted either separately or used together. They shall be done at the beginning of the term, in the middle and at the end of the term. Tests will also be done at the end of topic to test knowledge acquired after the topics.
