“Cool bruf” this is just a sample of the idiolect/sociolect which teenagers use. An idiolect varies from person to person as an idiolect is the speech of an individual. This can vary quite drastically between people. For instance one of your peers could possibly speak a foreign language and this would be an example of his idiolect. Whereas sociolect is a particular type of language used in a group of people.

Slang is more often used amongst the younger generation than any other age group within London. This is probably due to the fact that most of the younger people in London want to seem “cool and popular” within school or even around their friends. Another contributing factor would be to do with “social status” within school, those who know what some specific slang terms mean and can use them in a sentence or automatically “respected” more than if you did not use them.

Moreover teenage slang has a lot more consequences, for example one of my friends went to an interview, when he was asked questions he answered them with non-standard English (slang) and was denied the job directly because he would not speak in standard English. I completely agree with the decision which the interviewer made as every single person is capable of speaking standard English. Why should you be given a job if you cannot speak standard English even in a simple interview?

England is a stew full of bright brilliant accents and dialects, we are such a diminutive island and yet our dialects can completely change if you travel a few hundred miles. In my opinion my personal favourite accent is the Scottish accent. One of the many reasons behind this is because it is so different and exotic which is why I love it.
