During the 20 th. century Russia went through a great deal of economic and social change, which shaped it to the nation we have today. Russia's transition from a command economy to a capitalist economy which implemented a more democratic and capitalist ideas just like the United States, has it's positive and negative effect. In which it still effects Russia and the last generation of soviet union youths who grew up during that era.

Establishing a system of a free market economy into a nation with a completely opposite economic system such as the Soviet union will be a challenge to do. Everything needed to change in order for Russia to become a capitalist nation. Firstly the market system, banking, putting the ideology of capitalism to the people and the issue of property rights had to be put into place/order. These changes were made in a political and economic movement know as Perestroika which literally means restructuring or rebuilding. This movement became a stepping stone to the collapse of the Soviet Union in Russia.

Perestroika was apolitical movement during the Soviet Union in the 1980's, which basically restructured the soviet union's political and economic system. Mikhail Gorbachev who initiated the movement Perestroika wanted to restructured the already command economy with that of a more market economy to lessen government role in business. Which will in turn help the economy and improve production levels and the standard of living. That being said, Perestroika invoked many controversy and tension in the soviet union with conservatives against these reform/movement and liberal supporting the reforms that came along with Perestroika.
